William Bromley Allen (1854 – 2 July 1919)
William was born in Shrewsbury and baptised at Holy Cross and St. Giles’ Church on 12 November 1854. He was the son of Elijah and Martha (née Bromley) and his father worked as a railway inspector. By 1871 the Allen family had moved to Rugby and William was working as a railway clerk. He later moved to work in London and married Martha Cave in Leicestershire in 1879. They had six children: William Elijah (1880-1888), Fred Cave (1882-1961), Winifred Martha (1886-1887), Frank (1889-1892) and twins Dorothy (1893-1960) and Marjorie (1893-1985).
William worked as a station master and the family moved around the country with his job. They lived in Woburn Sands (1881), Banbury (c.1886-188), Streethay Lichfield (1891), Rhyl (1901) and Cambridge (at least 1911 onwards). The family were living at ‘St. Lawrence’ 71 Cherry Hinton Road in 1911 and William died at home ‘after much suffering’ in 1919. The funeral was held at St. John’s Church, Hills Road on 5 July before internment at Mill Road Cemetery.
Martha Ann Allen (née Cave) (1854 – 6 April 1932)
Martha was born in Newton, near Rugby and baptised at Clifton upon Dunsmore on 5 March 1854. She was the daughter of carpenter Thomas and Ann and aged 17 was working as an apprentice dressmaker to Catherine Pridmore in Rugby. Martha died at Cherry Hinton Road aged 78 years old.
Dorothy Allen (22 November 1893 – 6 June 1960)
Marjorie Allen (22 November 1893 – 26 July 1985)
Dorothy and Marjorie were born in Rhyl when their father was station master there and were baptised on 14 January 1894. In 1911 Dorothy was assisting in the home, and Marjorie was working as an apprentice dressmaker. After their parents died they remained at 71 Cherry Hinton Road until at least 1939. Dorothy died at Addenbrookes Hospital in 1960 and Marjorie died aged 91 years old.
