Monument

This coped stone is roughly 20 rows east of the central path and 8 rows west of the east path in the centre of the parish of St Mary the Great. It has sunk into the ground and was completely covered in grass which is why the inscription is so well preserved. The grass was put back after the photo was taken.

Inscription

To the Memory of LUCY ALLEN died August 23 1856 age 77 years

Lucy Allen (née Barnes) (c.1779 – 23 August  1856)

Lucy was the daughter of Thomas and Ann Barnes and married cooper Thomas Allen. They lived in Kimbolton and had at least five children: Martha (1808-), Sarah (1811-), Ann (1813-), Jabez (1818-1886) and Lucy Ann (1819-1878).

Lucy Ann Allen married Richard Dimmock (1806-1889) in September 1854, and Thomas Allen had already died by then.  Richard was a stationer with a shop at 18 King’s Parade. Lucy is thought to have lived with them and died at King’s Parade aged 75 years old. Newspaper reports of her death said ‘she was beloved and respected by all who knew her, and has left her surviving friends a bright example of Christian piety’.
