Elizabeth Ambrose [nee Todd] ( c.1837 – 12 May 1917)

Elizabeth was born in Whittlesey, and was the daughter of Tomas and Sarah Todd.  Her father was the gatekeeper on the railway at Whittlesey, and she grew up at the Gate House.  She married Edmund Ambrose at Fletton near Huntingdon on 9th December 1858 when she was 21 years old.

Edmund was a master coach builder.  They had ten children together: Martha Elizabeth, Eleanor ‘Ellen’ [1863-1943], Kate Mary [1865-1946], Annie Maria [1869-1963], Arthur Russel [1869-1942], Florence Agnes [1871-1941], Edmund ‘Harry’ [1873-], Albert Thomas [1875-] and two further children who died as young children.

The family lived at 12 East Road [1861], 1 Brewhouse Buildings [1871] and 15 Church Street [1881].   In 1866 Edmund was declared bankrupt, which must have been very stressful for Elizabeth and the rest of the family.  At that time he was running a coach building business on Regent Street and also a tabacconist on  Trumpington Street. Edmund died in 1886 aged just 50 years old.  After being widowed Elizabeth was living at 3 Mawson Road in 1891 with 7 of her children and working as a domestic housekeeper. She was still at Mawon Road in 1901 with 5 of her children, and was no longer working outside the home.

By 1911 she was living at 57 Mawson Road and was her age is recorded as 73 years old. Harry, Elenor and Martha Elizabeth were still living with her. She died in 1917 after what the newspapers said was ‘a long and painful illness’.

Martha Elizabeth Ambrose (c.1861 – 15 November 1937)

Martha was the eldest child of Edmund and Elizabeth.  She never married and lived at home. None of the census records show her with an occupation. She lived at 57 Mawson Road until she died in 1937.

Eleanor Ambrose (13 February 1863 – 21 October 1943)

Eleanor was known as Ellen throughout her life. She never married and lived with her mother Elizabeth until she died. She worked as a dressmaker.  She continued to live at 57 Mawson Road after the death of  her mother and sister Martha.  In 1939 she was described as a retired dressmaker.  She died aged 80 years old.  At the time she was still living at 57 Mawson Road, but probate records show she died at Rustat Road.
