Arthur Ayres (1896‒1918), Sergeant (11591) in the 7th Battalion the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, died in action in Salonica on 25 January 1918, aged 21. His death is commemorated with a headstone in the Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece, as well as in this family grave.

Arthur was born in 1896 in Blunham, Bedfordshire. He was the second of five children born to Andrew Edward Ayres and Eliza Anne Ayres (née Howse). In 1911 Arthur was staying with his maternal grandparents at 29 Islip Road, Oxford. He enlisted in Oxford and became Sergeant (11591) in the 7th Battalion the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. He died in action in Greece on 25 January 1918, aged 21. He was entitled to the Victory medal and the British War medal.
