Robert William Halls (1859 – 26 June 1929)

Robert was born in Bottisham and was the illegitimate son of Jane (1842-1928). He was baptised in Burwell on 14 January 1860 and grew up with his mother and grandparents in Bottisham. He married Lydia Bowers on 6 January 1881 at  St. Giles’ Church and the couple had four children: Henrietta Mabel (1882-1941), Gertrude Ada (1886-1935), Clifford Robert (1889-1944) and one further child who died as an infant.

Robert worked as a cook at St. John’s College and the family lived at Trumpington Street (1891/1901) and then at Rosendale, 179 Hills Road (at least 1911 onwards). He died at home aged 70 years old.

Lydia Halls (née Bowers) (10 August 1854 – 28 May 1941)

Lydia was the daughter of Nathan and Martha (née Pepper) and sister of Sarah and Annie.   Nathan was a coal porter and later a fish monger, her mother Martha was a launderess.  Lydia grew up at 3 Thompson’s Lane (1861) and  3 Kettle’s Yard (1871). Aged 16 she was working as a dressmaker and married Robert Halls when she was 26 years old. After she was widowed she lived at 65 Rock Road with her daughter Henrietta, and died at the Chesterton Institution on Union Lane in 1941.

Henrietta Mabel Ayres (née Halls) (11 August 1882 – 7 December  1941)

Henrietta was the eldest child of Robert and Lydia and married Percy Miller Ayres (1879-1959) on 16 May 1907 at St. John’s Church on Hills Road.  Percy worked as an inspector for a life assurance company and in 1911 the couple were living  in Lowestoft.  They had one son: Dennis Robert Percy (1914-2000) and Percy served in the 1st World War.  They lived at 65 Rock Road from at least 1916 onwards and Henrietta died at home aged 59 years old.

Percy Ayres died in Chertsey, Surrey in December 1959.
