Sophia Bailey (née Hamilton) (1837 – 21 March 1885)

Sophia was born in Chalvey, which used to be a village, but is now a suburb of Slough in Berkshire. She was the daughter of labourer James and his launderess wife  Jane and was baptised in Chalvey on 10 December 1837.  Aged 23 (1861) she was living at home and working as a servant.  She married William Bailey at Burnham (just outside Slough) on 5 February 1865.

William Bailey was a tailor, and in 1881 the couple were living on the High Street in Bishop Stortford. Sophia died at Addenbrookes Hospital, and although her grave monument gives her age as 44 years old, she was probably 47 years old.

William Bailey went on to have a family with Sarah Moule (1854-1937). They lived together as man and wife, but no record can be found of a marriage.  They had four children: William John (1884-1960),  James Moule (1886-1956), Florence Sarah (1887-1902) and Bernard Eton (1889-1917).   William John Bailey was born on 14 October 1884, so it is possible that he was the son of William and Sophia.  William died in Bishop Stortford in 1906.
