Relationships: -Husband and wife and wife’s mother

Sarah Jane Baker (née Adams) (c 1805 – 1878)

Sarah was born at Banbury Oxfordshire. She married glazier Samuel Baker in the early 1840s. In 1851 the family are living with their daughter Ellen and Sarah’s widowed mother Sarah at Hope Cottage, West Back St Olney. They had oneservant.

Sarah was living in Downing Street when she died.

Henry James Church (1835 – 1912)

Henry was born in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He trained as a druggist and by 1861 was in the employ of Henry Baly who had a chemist shop in the Market Place St Albans.

Henry married Ellen Baker in 1866. Banns were read at the Church of Andrew the Great, Cambridge  on June 17th.

In 1871 they were living at 18/19 St Andrew’s Street. Henry was a chemist and this was also the site of a his chemist’s shop. Living with the family was Frank Thompson a 16 year old apprentice and two servants. By 1881 there were two assistants working in the shop, and living with the family, as well as 2 servants.

The couple had three children: Edward H (b 1867), Ellen Mary (b 1869) and Frank P (b 1875). Edward went on to work with his father in the shop and Frank became a solicitor. Ellen Mary married Arthur Augustus Walker.

Whether the marriage of Henry and Rosa was a happy one or not we will never know, but on the 1911 census Henry wrote Very Much Married under the heading for that condition! Which suggests a certain sense of humour on Henry’s part. By this time he had retired and was living with Ellen at 1 Lynewoode Road. Also in the house were Christine Farren, a nurse/lady companion, a cook and a housemaid. Henry died here a year later at the age of 76. Ellen lived on in the house for a further 21 years.

Ellen Rosa Church (1842-1933)

Ellen was born in Olney Buckinghamshire, to Samuel & Sarah Baker. She married Henry Church on June 20th 1866, in Olney.

Ellen lived till she was 90.
