Sam Layton Ball (1843-1895)

Sam was born in Peterborough and was baptised at St. John’s Church on 20 August 1843. He was the only son of fellmonger Samuel Ball and his wife Elizabeth (née Layton) and grew up at Narrow Bridge Street, Peterborough. He lived at home until at least 1871 and worked as a clerk and then a telegraphist .  He had moved to Cambridge by 1881 and was lodging with the Clark family at 22 Clarendon Street. He was recorded as being a telegraph supervisor. He was still lodging with at Clarendon Street in 1891 but died at 30 Orchard Street aged 52 years old.
