He was the son of agricultural labourer John Banyard and Martha and grew up at North Gate Street, Hopton. He married Sarah Pollington in 1858 and they had at least three children: Martha Elizabeth (1859-1889), William John (1861-1950) and Sarah Elizabeth (1863-1893). The children were all born in Cambridge and the family lived at 2 Hills Road (1861) and 4 Norfolk Terrace (1871).  Robert was a draper’s porter and Sarah worked as a needlewoman.  Robert died at Norfolk Terrace aged 39 years old.
