Mary Jessie (known as Jessie) Barber (née Steggles) (14 September 1878 – 13 March 1949)
Jessie was born in Freshwater, Isle of Wight and was the daughter of Robert and Mary Steggles. She was baptised in the Methodist Chapel, Freshwater on 18 December 1878. Robert was a plumber, and both he and his wife were born in/near Newmarket. Jessie grew up in Stevenage (1881) and Newmarket (1891/1901). She married butcher Lewis Barber in 1905 and they had at least six children: Ronald Harold (1906-2001), Ivan Llewellyn (1907-1996), Glenister Edward (1909-1967), Joyce, Leo A R (1917-) and Boyce Frank (1921-2006). The first five children were born in Ashley cum Silverley, but by 1920 the family had moved to live at Natal Road, Cambridge.
Joyce Noreen Mary Barber (1913 – 5 February 1921)
Joyce was born in Ashley, Newmarket and died at 2 Natal Road aged 7 years old. She was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 9 February 1921.
Lewis Harold Barber (12 April 1878 – 13 April 1965)
Lewis was born in Ashley cum Silverley, near Newmarket and was the son of Robert and Ann. Hew grew up in Ashley where his father was an agricultural labourer (1881) and then a shoemaker (1891). Aged 13, Lewis was working as an agricultural labourer, but by 1901 was a butcher’s assistant. He married for a second time in 1950 to widow Christina Robertson Plum (1900-1974) and died at Natal Road aged 87 years old.
