Inscription

In Memory of JOHN GILLAM BELL d July 24 1863 aged 72

John Gillam Bell (c.1792 – 24 July 1863)

John was the son of William and Sarah (née Gillam) Bell.  He took over the seed/corn business of his Uncle John Gillam in December 1822.  The business was based at Peas Hill and was said to be an ‘old established seed, corn and salt warehouse’.  John married Eliza Robson and they had one son: John Gillam (1826-1859).  It is thought that Eliza died as a complication of childbirth in early March 1826.

From at least 1845 John was living at 11 Emmanuel Lane.  In 1851 he was recorded as being a farmer of 21 acres, and employing 6 staff. In 1861 he was living with his sister in law Sarah Robson and two servants.  He died aged 72 years.
