Willie Bishop (1888-1888)

Willie was the youngest of Arthur and Anna Bishop’s six children, and died aged 3 weeks old at 39 Panton Street.

Arthur Wallis Bishop (1848-1919), was born in Eye, Suffolk and was the son of grocer Henry. He had moved to live in Cambridge by 1871 and worked as a grocer’s assistant at Hallack and Bond.  Arthur married Anna Maria Tryer (1853-1932) and they had six children: Alice Margaret M.B.E.(known as Pearlie) (1876-1962), Henry Arthur (1877-1923), Mildred Louise (1878-1977), Anna Dorothea (1880-1951), Katherine Maud (1884-1946) and Willie.  Arthur became a partner at Hallack and Bond, and in 1903 was made Managing Director. Under his leadership the company grew and prospered as did the family’s financial position, and they settled to live at Edwinstowe, Chaucer Road.  They  worshipped at the local Trumpington Church, where Arthur was church warden for many years, and where he was buried when he died aged 71 years old.

After his death Edwinstowe was sold and was described as having: ‘lounge hall, morning room, dining and drawing rooms, large billiard room and study, with broad  staircase, leading to square corridor landing, to the 1st and 2nd floors, opening from which are 10 bedroooms, 2 dressing-rooms, 2 box-rooms, 2 bathrooms etc.  The domestic offices are ample for the residence, garage, central heating, gas, water, electric light and telephone are laid on’.
