William John Briggs (1844 – 27 December 1893)
William was the son of Richard and Mary Briggs. He was born in Cambridge and raised on St Andrew Street where his father was a hairdresser. He was baptised at St Andre the Great on 1st December 1854 when he was 10 years old.
He married Sarah Ann Layton in 1866 when he was 22 years old. They had six children together: Annie M (1868-), Alice Maud (1869-1953), Ellen Kate (1871-1950), Susan Emily (1874-1879), William Layton (1876-1957) and Henry Edward (1879-).
William worked in a number of different occupations. In 1871 the family were living at 7 Bradmore Street and he was working as a cork cutter. In 1881 they were still at Bradmore Street, and William was an engineers fitters assistant. In 1891 they were living at Sedley Cottage, 356 Mill Road and he was a railway carriage cleaner. William died aged 49 years old in 1893.
Susan Emily Briggs (d 1879)
Susan was the fourth child of William and Sarah Ann Briggs. She died aged 5 years old.
Sarah Ann Briggs (née Layton) (c.1844 – 4 November 1919)
Sarah was the daughter of Edward and Ann Maria Layton and was born in Newnham. She was baptised at St Mary the Less Church on 14th January 1844. She grew up at 7 Bradmore Street where her father was a printer prepman, and her mother a launderess. She married William Briggs, and continued to live with her widowed father and family at Bradmore Street (1871/1881).
After being widowed she continued to live at 356 Mill Road. Her father died at her home in 1900, and in 1901 she was living there with her youngest three children – Ellen, William and Henry. In 1911 she was living there with Ellen, a school teacher. She died in 1919.
