Relationships: Mother, father and four children

John Bright (c 1816 – 1 October 1878)

John was born in Littlebury Essex, the son of Richard a shepherd. He married Elizabeth on 13th January 1842 in Grantchester.  The couple had four children: Thomas (1845-1929), Jane (1847-1923), Mary Ann (1850-1926) and Alice (1851-1853). The family lived at 40 Coronation Street and John was working as a labourer (1851) and then as a gardener (1861/1871). John died at home aged 62 years old.

Elizabeth Bright (née Northrop*) (1811 – 10 November 1902)

Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Sarah. She was born and brought up in Grantchester where in 1841 she was working as a family servant at 6 Annesley Place (now part of Panton Street). She married John Bright when she was c.31 years old. After she was widowed she continued to live at 40 Coronation Street with her three children. Elizabeth died at home aged 91 years old

Alice Bright (29 May 1851 – 25 June 1853)

Alice died aged 2 years old.

Mary Ann Bright (1850 – 14 July 1926)

Mary Ann was baptised at St. Paul’s Church on 3 November 1850.    In 1871 she was working as a sewing machine stitcher, then as a dressmaker (1881-1901). She did not marry and lived at home with her parents and siblings.   After the death of her mother, Mary Ann moved to live at 11 Kingston Street together with her sister Jane and brother Thomas (1911) .  She died at 16 Kingston Street aged 76 years old.

Thomas Bright (1845 – 22 January 1929)

Thomas was baptised at St. Paul’s Church on 7 June 1846.  By the age of 15 (1861) he was working as a shop boy, and then became a grocer’s assistant (1871-1901).  In the census of 1911 he was described as a ‘dealer in boxes’.  He died at 16 Kingston Street aged 83 years old.

Jane Bright (1847 – 8 October 1923)

Jane was baptised at St Paul’s Church on 5 November 1848.  She is recorded on census records from 1871-1901 working as a dressmaker.  She died at 16 Kingston Street aged 75 years old.

* There is some confusion as to the spelling of Elisabeth’s maiden name as in the baptism register it looks like Nortrop, the marriage register NORTRIP and on the banns it is NORTHROP. When Sarah’s father died in 1827 his name was recorded as Northrop but in the 1841 census Sarah has given the name Nortrip. Only the transcripts have been used for this research and we have not seen the original documents.
