Frank Buttress (1885–1916), Private (79243) in the 31st Battalion, the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He died of wounds at No. 17 Casualty Clearing Station on 10 August 1916. He was buried in Grave 36, Row D at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, 1¾ miles south west of Poperinghe, Belgium. The Canadian Expeditionary Force was in action in the Battle of the Somme between July and November 1916. Frank is commemorated on this family grave.

Frank was born on 7 August 1885 in Cambridge. He was the seventh of the ten children of James Buttress and Caroline Buttress (née Carlton). Initially Frank worked as an auctioneer’s clerk before emigrating to Canada where he worked as a stenographer’s clerk. On 17 November 1914 at Calgary, Canada Frank joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He had already served three years with the 3rd Suffolk Volunteers. Frank died of wounds on 10 August 1916 at No. 17 Casualty Clearing Station. He was buried in Grave 36, Row D at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, 1 ¾ miles south west of Poperinghe, Belgium.
