William Carpenter (21 March 1862 – 13 April 1927)

William was born at 3 Granby Yard, Bridge Street, Cambridge, and was baptised on 13 April 1862.  His parents were Sykes and Maria Louisa Carpenter.  Sykes worked as a shoemaker, and Maria as a launderess, and the family later moved to 20 Trumpington Street.

In 1883 he married Elizabeth Moranda Crack in Cambridge and they had at least six children together Gertrude May [1885-1962], Charles William [1886-1944], William James [1887-1974], Sykes John [1891-1891], Margaret Louisa [1892-1977] and Sydney Bernard [1894-1916]. Their son Sydney died at the Somme in 1916.

William worked as a railway porter and later as a ‘head checker’ on GNR.  The family lived initially at 59 York Street before moving to 27 Thoday Street.  William died at Thoday Street in April 1927 aged 65 years old.

Elizabeth Moranda Carpenter  [nee Crack] (31 January 1858 – 4 January 1944)

Elizabeth was bornin Cambridge and was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Crack. She was baptised at St Clement’s Church on 28th March 1858.  Her father was a tabacco cutter and she was raised at 13 Thompsons Lane. She married William Carpenter in 1883 when she was xxxx years old.

After being widowed she continued to live at 27 Thoday Street with her children Charles and Margaret.  On the 1939 she is noted on the census as being an invalid.  She died aged 85 years old.

Margaret Louisa Carpenter (26 May 1892 – 28 February 1977)

Margaret was the fifth of the six children born to William and Elizabeth Carpenter.   She worked as a daily domestic in a private home, and lived at 27 Thoday for most of her life – remaining there after her parents died.  She never married and died aged 84 years old.
