Isaac Catchpole (c.1857 – 8 June 1938)
Isaac was born in Tattingstone in Suffolk, a small village six miles south of Ipswich. He was the son of Edward and Elizabeth Catchpole and was baptised at St Mary’s Church in Tattingstone on 3rd May 1857. In 1871 he was 14 years old and working as an agricultural labourer like his father. By 1881 he was working on the railway as a railway guard and living as a lodger in West Ham, Essex.
He married Selina Ray at St Martin of Tours Church in Chipping Ongar, Essex. In 1891 the couple had settle in Cambridge and were living at 15 Kingston Street – Isaac was by this time working as a ticket inspector. By at least 1905 they had moved to Goldlay House, 57 Tenison Road. In 1911 his occupation was recorded as a railway platform inspector. Isaac and Selina did not have any children and he died at Tenison Road aged 81 years old.
Selina Maria Catchpole (née Ray) (21 January 1859 – 4 May 1954)
Selina was born in Colne Engraine in Essex, and baptised at St Andrew’s Church on 5th June 1859. Colne Engraine is a village 10 miles north west of Colchester. She was the daughter of Henry and Ellen Ann Ray. Henry was an agricultural labourer, and Ellen was a dressmaker. Aged 22 Selina was living in Chipping Ongar, and working as a housemaid to Henry Gibson, a solicitor and clerk of the peace for Essex. She married Isaac Catchpole when she was 28 years old. She continued to live at 57 Tenison Road after his death, and in 1939 was living there with companion/helper Bessie Winter. Selina died at her home in 1954 aged 95 years old – she had lived at the house for nearly 50 years.
