Isaac was born in Tattingstone in Suffolk, a small village six miles south of Ipswich.  He was the son of  Edward and Elizabeth Catchpole and was baptised at St Mary’s Church in Tattingstone on 3rd May 1857.  In 1871 he was 14  years old and working as an agricultural labourer like his father.  By 1881 he was working on the railway as a railway guard and living as a lodger in West Ham, Essex.

He married Selina Ray at St Martin of Tours Church in Chipping Ongar, Essex.  In 1891 the couple had settle in Cambridge and were living at 15 Kingston Street – Isaac was by this time working as a ticket inspector. By at least 1905 they had moved to Goldlay House, 57 Tenison Road. In 1911 his occupation was recorded as a railway platform inspector.  Isaac and Selina did not have any children and he died at Tenison Road aged 81 years old.
