Montague Chapman (1887 – 26 December 1937)

Montague was born in Cambridge and was the son of Arthur and Elizabeth Chapman.  His father was a labourer and he grew up at 7 St Matthews Court (1891) and later at 36 Albert Street (190)].  By the age of 23 he was still living at home with his parents in Albert Street but was working as a picture frame maker.

He married Norah Sarah Vale at St Andrews Church, West Wratting on 4th August 1913.  The marriage was reported in the Cambridge Independent Press the following week, but the description was functional and brief:  ‘The guests numbered about 40. The presents were numerous and useful. The bellringers West Wratting rang a merry peal as the bride and bridegroom left the church. The subsequent festivities were held at the house of the bride’s parents’.

Montague and Sarah had one son: Leslie Arthur (1914-1954).  He is thought to have served as a Private in the Royal Fusiliers in the 1st World War, and returned to live at 13 Petworth Street in Cambridge (at least 1920 onwards).  He was still living at Petworth Street when he died aged 50 years old although his probate records show that he died at West Wratting.

(Norah) Sarah Chapman (née Vale)  (6 August 1888 – 10 January 1945)

Little is known of Sarah.  In the report of the marriage in the Cambridge Independent Press, she was described as the third daughter of Mr W. Vale of West Wratting.  In 1911 she was working as a domestic housemaid at Newnham College, Cambridge.  She married in 1913 aged 23 years old.

Sarah was widowed at the age of 49 years old, and continued to live at 13 Petworth Street with her son Leslie.  She died on 10th January 1945 aged 56 years old at home in Petworth Street.
