Arthur William Chapple (1872 – 24 December 1935)

Arthur was the fifth of eight sons born to Stephen Henry Chapple (1845-1905) and Harriet Ann (née Handley)(1845-1906). Stephen was a grocer’s assitant and Arthur grew up at 33 Gwydir Street as a small boy. By 1891 his father was running his own grocery shop at 1 & 2 York Street and Arthur was assisting in the business. He married Charlotte Forster on 1 August 1898 at St. Mary’s Church, Hunstanton and the couple had three children: Alfred Henry Arthur (1899-1900), Walter Alonzo William (1900-1963) and Dorothy Charlotte (1903-1976). Arthur worked as a grocer’s assistant and the family lived at Abbey Road.  He died at Croftholme, 22 Abbey Road on Christmas Eve 1935,

Charlotte placed an In Memoriam in the Cambridge Daily News in 1939 which read: ‘Chapple – in ever-lasting memory of a dear husband and father, Arthur William Chapple, who passed away December 24th, 1935. Sadly missed and never forgotten by his loving Wife, Son and Daughter, Abbey Road’.

Charlotte Chapple (née Forster)  (25 August 1874 – 15 January 1954)

Charlotte was born in Dersingham, twelve miles north of King’s Lynn and was the only daughter of Alfred Picket Forster (1845-1879) and Priscilla (née Boothby) (1848-1932). Her father was a sawyer/carpenter who died when Charlotte was four years old, leaving her mother with three children under the age of four. After she was widowed Priscilla ran a Lodging House at Roseneath Terrace, Hunstanton. Aged 15 (1891) Charlotte was working as a dressmaker’s aprentice before marrying Arthur Chapple when she was 23 years old. After his death she lived with daughter Dorothy at Abbey Road and died at Ashford Hospital, Stanwell.

Arthur and Charlotte’s infant son Alfred Henry Arthur Chapple died at Abbey Road on 29 August 1900 aged 11 months old. He was buried in the St. Andrew the Less area of Mill Road Cemetery on 2 September and it is thought he might have been buried in the same grave as his parents.
