Relationship: two brothers, and sister in law
Arthur John Charter (1899 – 27 January 1933)
Arthur was the youngest child of Walter and Elizabeth (née Allen) and grew up on Devonshire Road. His father was a carpenter/builder and aged 21 Arthur was working as an assistant in a bootmaker’s shop. Little is known about Arthur’s life after that point and he died at Beechcroft Road in Balham aged 43 years old.
Thomas Charter (1877 – 28 November 1938)
Thomas was Arthur’s elder brother and worked as a carpenter. He married May Diby in 1909 and they had at least two daughters: Thora Mary (1910-1992) and Betty May (1915-1999). The family lived at 19 Garden Walk and Thomas died aged 60 years old.
May Ethel Charter (30 April 1884 – 11 December 1962)
(Born Ethel May she appears to have been known as May)
May was the daughter of Henry and Jane annd grew up at 11 Princes Street and then 16 City Road where her father ran a bakery/shop. After she was widowed she ran a Lodging House from Garden Walk (1939) and died in Ely aged 78 years old.
