Robert Clarke (c.1844 – 22 December 1885)

Robert was born and raised  in Soham . He was the son of John and Charlotte Clarke.  His father was an agricultural labourer, and Robert was working as an apprentice carpenter by the age of 17 [1861].  He married Elizabeth Metcalfe in 1871 and they had one daughter Elizabeth Charlotte Metcalfe [1873-1940].

Robert and Elizabeth were living at 10 Victoria Street in 1881 and he was working as a college servant.  He died in 1885  aged 42 years old.

 

Elizabeth Bishop Clarke [nee Metcalfe] (1843 – 18 February 1920)

Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Metcalfe.  Her father was a college servant and later porter.  She grew up at Brandon Row and then Earl Street. She married Robert Clarke when she was 28 years old.

She was widowed when she was 42 years old and by 1891 was living at 23 Portugal Place and working as a Lodging House Keeper. She was living at 49 Mawson Road in 1911 and described herself as a retired Lodging House Keeper.  She died aged 76 years  old.
