Robert George Collins (1872-1934)

Robert was the eldest child of George and Mary (née Brand) and grew up at 15 East Road where his father was a labourer/bricklayer.  Aged 19 George was living at home and working as a auctioneer’s porter and married Ellen Custance in 1894. The couple had six children: Frank George (1894-1978), Herbert Thomas (1896-1971), Blanche Ellen (1897-1983), Ada Emily (1899-1990), Daisy Mabel (1900-1903) and Sidney Percy (1903-1972). Robert worked as a furniture and antique dealer from 1892 onwards and the family lived at 13 Blossom Street (1901), 73 Burleigh Street (1911) before moving toa shop at 88 Regent Street (at least 1917 onwards).

Robert advertised in local newspapers ‘exceptionally high prices for Chippendale, Sheraton, Queen Anne, Jacobean or French cabinets, sideboards, chairs, settees, tables, wardrobes, screens and clocks, also old china figures, tea services, silver, cut glass, needlework pictures, bronzes, coloured engravings, paintings etc. Household furniture and pianos bought’. He died at Regent Street aged 62 years old.

Ellen Elizabeth Collins (née Custance) (1873-1959)

Ellen was born in Great Abington, the daughter of William and Harriet (née Bunn). She worked as a servant for plumber/glazier Robert Craven at 6 Benet Street (1891) before marrying Robert Collins in 1894. After his death she lived at 88 Regent Street until at least 1945 and is thought to have died in Nottingham aged 84 years old.
