Henry Compton (1798 – 13 January 1860)
Henry was born in Potton, Bedfordshire and was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth. He was baptised in Potton on 13 August 1799. and later moved to Cambridge. He married Ann Brown on 13 February 1826 at St. Mary the Less and they had at least three children: Ann (1826-1902), Henry (1828-) and Thomas (1832-1883). They lived at 16 Little St. Mary Lane and Henry worked as a groom. Ann died in December 1836 and Henry then married Mary Law on 12 October 1837. He and Mary had at least one daughter: Mary Ann (1840-1901) before he was widowed for a second time in early 1843. Henry married for a third time to widow Sophia Longstaff in late summer 1843. In 1851 he was working as a labourer, and Sophia as a laundress and living at 16 Little St Mary’s Lane. He died aged 61 years and was buried on 20 January 1860.
Sophia Compton (née Blakey) (1799-25 November 1878)
Sophia was the daghter of William and Susan Blakey and was baptised in Cambridge on 10 November 1799. She married John Longstaff at St. Mary the Less Church in 1829 and they lived at Little St. Mary’s Lane, next door to Henry and Mary Compton (1841). John Longstaff worked as a porter and died in January 1842. After she was widowed for a second time in 1860 she continued to live at 16 Little St. Mary’s Lane with step daughter Mary Ann and her family.
Walter Henry Hopwood (1839 – 1876)
Walter was the husband of Mary Ann Compton, son in law of Henry and Sophia, and was born in Stansted, Essex. He was the son of carpenter Richard and Elizabeth (née Edwards) Hopwood and grew up in Ickleton. He was baptised in Ickleton on 4 August 1844. By 1861 he was living on Church Street in Ickleton with his widowed father and working as a carpenter. Walter married Mary Ann Compton in 1866 and they had at least three children: Mary Ann (1867-1936), Elizabeth Jane (1868-1957) and Richard Owen (1873-1874). In 1871 they were living with Sophia Compton at 16 Little St. Mary’s Lane and Walter was working as a carpenter. He died aged 36.
