Maria Coote (née English) (1834 – 9 May 1891)
Maria was born in Oxborough, Norfolk and was baptised there on 31 August 1834. She was the daughter of William and Martha English, but grew up in Barton Bendish with her aunt and uncle. Her uncle William Morley was a small holder, and after the death of her aunt Mary she worked as his housekeeper. Aged 26 (1861) she was working in West Dereham, Norfolk as the general servant to Alice Laycock. Maria then married William Coote at St. Paul’s Church, Cambridge on 2 June 1866.
William worked as a gardener and the couple lived at Sturton Street (1871) and then at the Gardener’s Cottage on Grange Road (1881) where William was the domestic gardener for Frederick Myers and his family. When the census of 1891 was taken in April the couple were lodging with Tom and Ellen Tiplady at 1 Caius Terrace. William was appointed as custodian of Mill Road Cemetery and Maria died at the Cemetery Lodge aged 56 years old. The couple are not believed to have had any children.
William Coote (c.1840 – 22 October 1919)
William was the son of Robert and was born in Barton Mills, Suffolk. He married Maria when he was 26 years old. After he was widowed he went to live at 26 Union Terrace (1901) with his niece Sarah Lewis – in 1901 he was described as a florist/gardener. By 1911 William was living at 144 Argyle Terrace with Sarah and her three daughters. He was working as a jobbing gardener, and Sarah acted as his housekeeper. He died aged 71.
