Inscription

Alfred John Darby (1838 – 16 December 1890)

Alfred was the son of George and Eliza Darby and grew up at 40 James Street.  His father was a printer and by the age of 12 Alfred was working as an errand boy, and by 22 years old had also become a printer.  He married Sarah Baillieu at St. Paul’s Church on 24 April 1864.

They lived at 7 Melbourn Place (1871/1881) before then moving to 15 Panton Street.  Alfred and Sarah had at least seven children: Florence Jane Baillieu (1865-1947), Sarah Eliza (1867-1950), Alfred George (1872-1930), Ernest Baillieu (1874-1958), Percy Charles Frederick (1877-), Lambert Francis Baillieu (1879-1955) and Dorothy Bangley (1890-1894).  NB – Dorothy was listed as a daughter on the 1891 census, but it is more likely that she was a grand-daughter, given that Sarah Darby would have been 54 years old when she was born.

Alfred died at Panton Street aged 52 years old.

Sarah Maria Farrow Darby (née Baillieu) (c.1836 – 3 April 1916)

Sarah was the daughter of Frederick and Mary Ann Baillieu (also sometimes written as Baillieux) and was born in Clerkenwell, London.  Her father worked as a railway porter, and she grew up in Royston and then at 10 Princes Street with her siblings who included Priscilla and Elizabeth. She married Alfred when she was c.28 years old.

After she was widowed she ran a lodging house from 15 Panton Street.  She died aged 80 years old.
