William James Donald (c.1860 – 4 September 1907)

William was the son of James and Maria (née Wood) and was born in Islington.  His father was a butcher who died when he was young and he grew up with Maria and his two younger sisters.  Maria was a launderess and by 1881 the family had moved to live at 78 Goldstone Road in Hove, and William was working as a photographic assistant.  He married Annie Tesling in Southampton in 1891 and they had two daughters: Hilda Dorothy Ellen (1896-1977) and Florence Lilian (1899-1992). Both girls were born in Cambridge, and in 1901 the family were living at 9 Haymarket Terrace.  William worked as a photographer, although it is not known which studio he worked for and he died aged 46 years old.

Annie Elizabeth Johanah Donald (née Tesling)  (14 December 1868 – 1 November 1948)

Annie was born in Southampton and baptised at St. James’ Church in the town on 1 May 1869. She was the daughter of sailor Charles Henry Tesling and Ellen (née Johnson), and Charles died in Eygpt in May 1870 of a suspected heart attack whilst at sea,  Ellen married again to ship steward Cornelius Collins and Annie grew up with her mother, step father, siblings and step siblings in Southampton.  Just before marrying William Donald Annie was helping her mother run a Lodging House at 9 Queen’s Terrace, Southampton.

Annie was widowed aged 38 years old and ran a Lodging House from 27 Portugal Place (1911), 51 Bridge Street (1921) and 17 Bateman Street (1939).  She died at Bateman Street aged 79 years old.
