Sophia Edwards [nee Gilby] (11 September 1842 – 21 June 1911)
Sophia was born in Balsham and was the daughter of Harley and Ann Gilby. Harley Gilby worked as an agricultural labourer, and Sophia was raised in Balsham. She married Maurice Edwards at St Peter’s Church in Babraham on 6th July 1868 when she was 25 years old.
Sophia and Maurice had six children: Laura [1870-1962], Agatha [1876-1923], Rosa Annie [1878-1929], Beatrice [1879-1966], Maurice Charles [1884-1946] and Ethel Harriet [1886-1977].
In 1871 the family were living at Home Farm Cottages in Babraham and Maurice was working as an agricultural labourer. In 1881 they were living at Worsted Lodge in Balsham and Maurice was a maltster. In 1891 they were still at Worsted Lodge and he was recorded as an agricultural labourer, in 1901/1911 they were still there and he is recorded as a maltster. Sophia died in June 1911 aged 68 years old.
Maurice Edwards (1 March 1849 – 17 January 1947)
Maurice was born in Sawston and was the son of William and Ann Edwards. His father William was an agricultural labourer. He was widowed aged 62 years old, and in 1939 was living at 151 Coleridge Road, where his occupation is recorded as retired maltster. He died aged 97 years old in 1947, having outlived his wife and three of his six children.
