James Ellis ( 1860 – 20 July 1932)

James was the son of George and Emma and grew up at 13 Church Street (1861/1871) and 6 City Road (1881). His father was a boot closer, and aged 10 James worked as an errand boy for a chemist before later becoming a grocer’s porter.  He married Georgiana Collen (1860-1893) and they  are thought to have had two children: William James (1889-) and another child who died as an infant.  The family lived at 15 James Street and Georgiana died aged 33 years.

It is then thought that James married Georgiana’s elder sister Mary (1856-1910) and in 1901 they were living at 16 Emery Street with his son William and two lodgers. By this time James was working as a shop assistant in a glass and china shop. Mary died, because in 1911 James was a widow once more and living  with housekeeper Edith Walter and two lodgers at Emery Street. He then married Mary Ann (1874-1943) and from at least 1928 onwards they lived at 5 Albert Buildings on Hills Road.  James died at the Mill Road Infirmary aged 71 years old.

NB – no records of any of James’ marriages have been found.

Mary Ann Ellis (6 September 1874 – 27 December 1943)

Little is known of Mary’s life.  She married James and in 1943 was still living at the Albert Buildings although she died at Chesterton Hospital.
