John Charles William Filby (21 May 1876 – 3 January 1947)

John was the son of William and Sallia (née Beavis) and was baptised at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Cambridge on 25 June 1876.  In 1881 he was living at 12 New Street and his father worked as a bricklayer.  Sallia Filby died in 1883 and William the following year, meaning John was an orphan by the age of 8 and it is not known where he then grew up. He married Sarah Lumb in 1906 and the couple had at least two children: John William Walter (1907-1970) and Kenneth Henry (1916-1971).

John worked as a college servant and the family lived at 15 Sidney Street (1911) and then at 9 Christ’s Lane (at least 1925 onwards).  In 1939 he was documented as being a college bicycle porter and a member of the college fire squad.  Sarah also worked as a college bedmaker.  John died at Christ’s Lane aged 70 years old.

Sarah Elizabeth Filby (née Lumb)  (26 August 1877 – 3 February 1960)

Sarah was bornin Histon and grew up on Cottenham Road (1881) and then 8 Briggs Court (1891). Her parents were John and Mary and her father was a hawker and later a greengrocer.  Aged 23 Sarah was working as a domestic servant for Margaret Dunlop at Jesus College Grove. After she was widowed Sarah remained at 9 Christ’s Lane until at least 1955 and then moved to 8 Jesus Terrace.  She died at 4 Emmanuel Road, the home of her son Kenneth.
