Charles Friend (1860 – 1885)

Charles was the son of Emmerson and Mary Ann (née James) Friend. He was born 28th March and baptised in St Peter’s Church Wisbech in August 1860. Emmerson was a veterinary surgeon who died in 1862 when Charles was 2. Mary Ann remarried in 1867. Charles was brought up in Cambridge and became a decorator. His stepfather Barnett Leach was part of the Leach firm of Master craftsmen in City Road and as in the 1881 census Charles gave his occupation as decorator he may have been part of the firm.
Charles married Kate Mary Simpson on April 14th 1884 in the parish of St Andrew the Less. They were living in Melbourne Place when Mary gave birth to a son, Percy Charles, the following May and when Charles died  less than 2 months later.
