Joseph Richard Hambler Gardiner (1858 – 19 August 1934)
Richard was born in Lawshall, Suffolk, a small village between Sudbury and Bury St. Edmunds and was the son of Charles and Sarah. By the age of 1871 he had moved with his family to Papworth Everard, where Charles Gardiner worked as a coachman. Joseph worked on the railway and married Elizabeth Clarke in 1879. They had five daughters: Beatrice Ella (1881-), Kate Elizabeth (1883-1970), Alice Daisy (1885-), Faith Eleanor (1889-1975) and Grace Gladys (1893-1987). Joseph worked as a porter (1881) and later as a heavy goods loader (1911) and the family lived at York Street (1881), 29 Great Eastern Street (1891) and then at 6 Belgrave Road (at least 1901 onwards). He died at the Mill Road Infirmary.
Elizabeth Gardiner (née Clarke) (7 November 1854 – 19 August 1950)
Elizabeth was born in Stradishall, Suffolk – a village between Haverhill and Bury St. Edmunds and was the daughter of licensed hawker Joseph and Ann. She lived at 6 Belgrave Road until at least 1939 and then at 32 Green End Road. It is thought that Elizabeth was hospitalised at the Chesterton Hospital from at least 1948 onwards and died there aged 95 years old.
