Betsy Gilbert  [nee Germany] (28 February 1881 – 4 July 1959)

Betsy was the daughter of George and Betsy Germany.  Her father was a labourer, and she grew up on Belgrave Road in Cambridge.  She married Cornelius Gilbert in 1900 when she was 19 years old.  They lived together at 27 Belgrave Road [1901] and Cornelius worked as a butcher, and Betsy as a dressmaker. By 1911 they were living at 50 Kingston Street.

They had at least eight children: Elsie [1901-1987], Gladys Victoria [1903-1917], William [1908-1935], George Alfred [1907 -1988], Rosalie [1909-2006],Stanley [1912-], Frederick [1917-1970], Victor [1919-2000].

In 1939 Betsy was living at ‘Pinhay’ on Newmarket Road, with Cornelius and two youngest sons. She died at the Evelyn Nursing Home on Trumpington Road aged 78 years old.

 

Cornelius George Gilbert (2 May 1875 – 1 September 1963)

Cornelius was born in Cambridge. He married Betsy Germany when he was 25 years old. He worked as a Master Butcher .  He died aged 88 years old at Chesterton Hospital in Cambridge and left an estate valued at £10,688.

 

Gladys Victoria Gilbert (24 May 1903- 25 August 1917)

Gladys was the second child of Cornelius and Betsy Gilbert.  Her death was reported in the Cambridge Daily News on 31st August 1917:

FUNERAL OF GLADYS V. GILBERT.

The funeral of Gladys Victoria Gilbert, who died the age of 14 on August 25th, after a long illness, at the house of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Gilbert, of Antwerp House, Brookfields, Mill-road, took place at Mill-road Cemetery on Thursday afternoon. The Rev. C. Howard, vicar of St. Philip’s Church, officiated both the Cemetery Chapel and at the graveside, and in the course of the service in the chapel, in a short address, made sympathetic reference to Miss Gilbert, who had been for some years a scholar in St. Philip’s Sunday School. ….The coffin was of plain English oak. with brass handles, and the plate bore the following inscription: “Gladys Victoria Gilbert, died August 25th. 1917, aged years.” Amongst the many beautiful floral tributes were the following: Handsome white flowers cross, from Mum and Dad…’

 

William Gilbert (25 February 1908 – 13 August 1935)

William was the eldest son of Cornelius and Betsy Gilbert. He married Lily Mercy Page in 1933 when he was 25 years old.   He died two years later at 132 Shelford Road, Cambridge.  He left an estate valued at £1,070 1s and 6d.
