John Read Gray (1788 – 7 August 1869)
John was born in Barkway, a village five miles south east of Royston and was the son of John and Ann. He was baptised in Barkway on Christmas Eve 1788. He married Ann Phillips on 4 May 1815 in Cambridge and the couple had at least six sons: Arthur John (1816-1895), William Alfred (1822-179), John Phillips (1824-1909), Henry Samuel (1825-1889), Thomas (1832-) and Charles Edward (1835-1917). John worked as a carpenter/builder and the family lived at 2 Emmanuel Lane (1851/1861) before retiring to live at Mill Road Cottage, Mill Road (1871) and then Tennis Court Terrace. He died at Tennis Court Terrace ‘after a few days’ illness’.
Ann Harriett Gray (née Phillips) (c.1789 – 14 January 1872)
Ann was the daughter of John and Sarah and was baptised in Cambridge on 27 May 1792. After she was widowed she went to live with son Arthur and daughter in law Emma at 2 Eastbourne Villas, Hills Road (1871) and died there in January 1872.
Emma Gray (née Gray) (1814 – 20 December 1879)
Emma was the daughter of Thomas and was born in Chichester, Sussex. She was the second wife of Arthur John Gray and married him on 26 March 1849. His first wife Elizabeth (née Plum) had died in 1842 and Arthur was a builder. They lived at 2 Tennis Court Road (1851), 16 Pembroke Road (1861) and Eastbourne Villas (at least 1871 onwards). Emma died at Eastbourne Villas at the age of 65.
Arthur Gray married for a third time in 1881 to Susan Hickman (1840-1922). The couple retired to live on the Isle of Wight, where Arthur died aged 79 years old and was buried there.
