William Haggis (1790 – 1 January 1862)

William was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (née Chapman) Haggis and was born in Trumpington.  He married Susannah (also known as Susan) Warren on 30 January 1814 at Holy Sepulchre Church. William worked as a college servant at Trinity College from at least 1807 onwards and the family lived at 23 Rose Crescent.  William and Susannah had at least nine children: Elisabeth Chapman (1815-1887), Edward (1816-1817), Susannah (1818-1818), Susannah (1820-1821), Susannah (1822-1897),  Ann (1823-1891), William Warren (1827-1860), Henry Samuel (1828-1858) and Edward (1831-1894).

William died at Rose Crescent and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 8 January. The funeral was reported in the Cambridge Chronicle and Journal who reported ‘The deceased who had just completed his 55th year as a faithful and confidential servant at Trinity College, was highly respected and generally beloved by all who had the knowledge of his services and friendship during that long period. The hearse and mourning coaches containing the relatives and immediate friends of the deceased on passing the great gates of Trinity College were joined by the fellow servants of the deceased who followed in procession….and many a tear was shed by those assembled over the grave of an old and valued fellow servant’.

Susanna Haggis  (née Warren) (6 January 1790 – 6 January 1871)

Susanna was born in Waterbeach and was known as Susan through her life.  She died at Rose Crescent on her 81st Birthday.
