Samuel was born in Cambridge and was the eldest son of Thomas and Charlotte. His father was a shoemaker and he grew up at Brunswick Place (1851) and 3 Fair Stret (1861). Charlotte Hayward worked as a college servant and died in 1865. Thomas Hayward then ran the Willow Tree pub, Willow Walk.  Samuel married Martha West in 1866 and they had four children: Florence (1868-1945), Ernest Edward (1869-1922), Emma (1881-1941) and another child who died as an infant.  In 1871 Samuel and Martha were living with his father at the Willow Tree and Samuel was working as a bookbinder finisher. He and Martha later ran ‘The Cricketers’ pub at 18 Melbourn Place (at least 1881 onwards) and he died there aged 67 years old.

Martha Hayward  (née West) (1842 – 13 March 1921)

Martha was the daughter of Robert and Mary West. Her father had died by 1851 and she grew up at 2 Nine Pin Court. Her mother worked as a laundress and in 1861 Martha was assisting her mother. After she was widowed she ran The Cricketers, helped by barmaid Lilian Maud Halls (1911) and died The Cricketers aged 79 years old.

Ernest Edward Hayward (1869 – 5 June 1922)

Edward was the only son of Samuel and Martha and grew at The Cricketers. In 1901 he was working as a ‘brewer’s traveller collector’ and still living at home. He maried Elizabeth Betson in 1906 and later took over the running of the pub. He died at The Cricketers aged 52 years old, and his funeral took place on 8 June 1922.
