Marianne Hewitt (1811- 27 June 1864)
Marianne was the daughter of James and Susannah Hewitt. She was born in New Buckenham in Norfolk, where James Hewitt was a farmer. By 1851 she was living in Cambridge and was landlady of the University Arms Hotel. Also helping her run the hotel were her elder sister Susannah who was the barmaid, and younger sister Rebecca who was the cook. They also had a chamber maid, house maid, kitchen maid, under Ostler and a ‘boots’ servant.
Marianne was still the ‘Inn keeper’ at the University Arms in 1861. She died at the hotel in 1864 aged 52 years old.
Susannah Elizabeth Hewitt (1810 – 29 July 1877)
Susannah was the elder sister of Marianne, and appears to have been known by the name of Susan. She too was born in Old Buckenham and baptised there on 5th July 1810. Susan helped her to run the University Arms and was the housekeeper in 1861. After Marianne’s death she took over the managing of the hotel and in 1871 was running it with the help of her sisters Rebecca and Ellen. She died aged 66 years old in 1877.
The University Arms hotel continued to be run by the Hewitts until at least 1888 according to city directories. Younger sisters Rebecca and Ellen took over its management. By 1891 the sisters were living in Wells and described themselves as ‘retired innkeepers’. Rebecca died in 1892, and Ellen in 1903. One of the executors of Ellen’s will was Marcus Dennis Bradford, who ran the University Arms after the Hewitts.
