The monument in November 2014.

Monument Located on the corner of the south path and west path next to the lodge. Most of the Celtic cross that would have been on the top is missing. The inscription is quite hard to read now.

Frederick Alexander Hills (8 July 1814 – 23 March 1898)

Frederick was the son of John and Elizabeth Hills. He was born in Ely and baptised at St. Mary’s Church on 25 July 1814.  He married Ann Phoebe Shanks (1813-1877) on 20 November 1837 in Withersfield when he was 23 years old.  Frederick was a wine and spirit merchant and they lived at 69 St. Andrew Street.  Although they did not have any children of their own they adopted a daughter called Agnes (1834-1916).

Frederick married for a second time on 25 August 1885 at St Paul’s Church to widow Elizabeth Andrews (1815-1889).  Elizabeth died in March 1889 and he then married for a third time on 10 March 1891 at Christ Church to Kate Holt.  The couple lived at 15 Maid’s Causeway (April 1891) and then at Tenison Road (at least 1895 onwards). He died at 72 Tenison Road aged 83 years old.

Catherine Mary Hills (Kate) (née Holt) (13 October 1849 – 26 March 1926)

Kate was the youngest daughter of Henry and Mary Ann (née Frohock) Holt and was baptised on 11 November 1849.  Her father was a leather seller, and she grew up at 64 Sidney Street.  After she was widowed she  lived at Tenison Road until at least 1908, but then moved to 5 Aylestone Road and died at home aged 76 years old.
