Bertha Judge (née Harvey) (1855 – 21 November 1892)
Bertha was born in Dover, Kent and was the daughter of carpenter John Harvey and his wife Ann. She married Thomas Judge at St. Mary the Virgin Church in Dover on 11 March 1873. Thomas was a publican and they had at least nine children together: Bertha Ann Elizabeth (1873-1972), Stephen Henry (1875-1952), Thomas William (1877-1939), John Albert (1879-1962), Percy Alfred (1880-1884), Maude Emily (1885-1981), Letitia (1888-1967), Cecil Stanley (1890-1960) and Arthur Harvey (1892-1899). The children were born in various locations across England (Notting Hill, Dover, Deal, Bootle, Poplar) and Letitia was born in America, so the family travelled a great deal. By 1891 they had settled at the Salisbury Hotel on Tenison Road, where Thomas was the landlord. Bertha died there aged 37, five months after the birth of their youngest son Arthur.
Arthur Harvey Judge (June 1892 – 4 August 1899)
Arthur drowned in Chelmsford aged 7 years old. At the inquest Thomas Judge said that he had let him outside with a boy called Albert Bedford who was 9 years old. Arthur was very fond of fishing and had been cautioned several times to not do this. He, Albert and another boy called Bertie had gone fishing for two and a half hours. The two other boys heard Arthur fall into the water, and held out a fishing rod for him to hold on to, but he was unable to reach it. The police were fetched, the river was dragged and eventually his body was recovered from the water. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
Thomas William Judge (c.1851 – 31 August 1921)
Thomas was born in New York, USA and was the son of Stephen and Elizabeth (née Browne) Judge. He lived in New York until he was at least 4 years old and aged 9 years was living with his mother, maternal grandfather and siblings in Ashford Kent. He married Bertha Harvey when he was 22 years old. He married for a second time on 9 June 1893 to widow Emily Johnson (née Dunn) (1862-1927) in Liverpool. The couple had a further eight children together; Frank Harold (1884-1936), Louisa Hall (1895-1895), Walter Dunn (1896-1896), Annie (1897-), Eleanor Maud (1898-1979), Clara Ellen (1900-1976), Irene Kate (1902-1997) and Caroline Doris (1903-1994). They ran the Salisbury Hotel until at least 1896, but then moved to run the Market House pub on Tindal Street, Chelmsford. Thomas died there aged 70 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 5 September 1921.
After his death his son Cecil Stanley took over as landlord of the Market Place. Many of his children also became publicans/hotelliers.
