Walter John Kefford (16 September 1889 – 15 October 1940)

Walter Kefford with his mother and sister Lily

Walter was the son of William and Nancy Kefford and he was born in Sawston, just outside Cambridge. William Kefford worked in a leather and fur business, and Walter grew up on the High Street in Sawston.  His mother died when he was 10 years old. Aged 21 Walter was lodging at 3 Covent Garden and working as a cycle maker.

He married Elizabeth Sarah Loker (1890-1975) in 1915 – Elizabeth was known as Cissie.  From at least 1925-1935 the couple lived at 132-133 East Road, and then moved to live at 17 Fairfax Road.  They had two sons: Frederick Walter (known as Fred) (1919-1996) and Walter John (1924-1925).  Walter ran a cycle repair depot at Nelson Street which he co-owned with A.Wetherell.  Newspaper adverts of the time read ‘special terms to the trade, repairs of every description promptly executed’.  Walter died at Fairfax Road aged 51 years old.

His widow married Harry Brown in 1948 and died in 1975 aged 84 years old.
