Henry Leland (1818 – 17 August 1880)

Henry was the son of James and Catherine Leland.  He was baptised on 27th September 1818.  He was living on Petty Cury in 1851 and working as a servant to banker Thomas Hall Fisher.  He married Ann Cooper in 1855.  Henry and Ann had at least eight children: Jane Kate [1856-1919], Emily Ann, Margaret [1860-1938], Jane Salome [1863-1939], Alice [1864-1925], Charlotte Pleasance [1866-1953], Harry Asplen [1869-] and Ben Cooper [1872-1915].

The family lived at Park Street – at number 37 in 1861 and later at number 43 [1871 onwards].  Both Henry and Ann worked as college servants, although it is not known which college they worked at.  Their son Ben Cooper worked as a servant at Trinity College, so there might have been a family connection to Trinity College.  Henry died 62 years old.

Ann Leland [nee Cooper] (c.1831 – 5 May 1888)

Ann was born in Soham and was the daughter of agricultural worker Robert Cooper and his wife Mary.   Aged 20 she was working as a housemaid in Ely. She married Henry Leland when she was c.24 years old.  After being widowed she continued to live at 43 Park Street with her children, and was still working as a ‘college servant’ in 1881.  She died aged 57 years old.

Emily Ann Leland (1858 – 8 March 1918)

Emily was the daughter of Henry and Ann.  She was baptised at All Saints Church on 3rd October 1858.  She lived at home with her parents, and continued to live at 43 Park Street her entire life.  After her mother died she lived there with sister Kate and brother Ben [1901]. In 1911 she was still living there with Kate, but was running it as a University lodging house.  Emily died at home in 1918 aged 59 years old.
