Frederick (Fred) George Lilley (27 October 1896 – 31 January 1933)
Fred was the son of Charles and Julia (née Franklin) and grew up at 97 Sedgwick Street, His father was a railway driver for Great Eastern Railway (G.E.R.) who died as a result of a work related accident in September 1914. Aged 14 (1911) Fred was working as an errand boy and by 1914 was also working for G.E.R. as an engine fitter. He enlisted into the army on 31 August 1914, and was discharged on 17 September for ‘not being likely to become an efficient soldier’, so his military career was curtailed after 18 days. His army papers show he was 5ft, 10.5 inches tall, weighed 153lbs (10 stone, 13 lbs), with brown hair, blue eyes, a fresh complexion and a scar above his left eyebrow.
He married Ethel Wallis in 1924 and they had at least two sons: Terrence Frederick Harry and Trevor Frederick Rex (1928-1997). They lived at 15 Grafton Street until at least 1930 and by 1933 were running the Wheelwright’s Arms at 82 East Road. Fred died at the Wheelwright’s aged 36 years old.
Ethel Mary Rebecca Lilley (née Wallis) (21 July 1897 – 2 May 1974)
Ethel is believed to have been the daughter of Fred and Ellen. She grew up at 16 Suez Road and Fred Wallis worked at the local cement works as a general labourer. After she was widowed she continued to run the Wheelwright’s Arms until at least 1948 and died aged 76 years old.
Terrence Frederick Harry Lilley (1926-1926)
Terrance was born in the summer of 1926 and died as an infant.
