Monument The kerbstones are hidden in an area of dense vegetation and it was only possible to uncover a small portion of the inscription which seems to be in good order.

John William Manning (1876-1924)

John was born in 1876 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.  He was the second of five children born to John William Wiles Manning (1853-1920) and Mary Ann Manning (née Wisbeach).  In 1881 the family lived at 34 Northampton Street, Cambridge.  By 1891 the family lived at 53 Norwich Street, Cambridge.  By 1901 John was still living at home but he was working as a domestic gardener.  John married Charlotte Lucy Porter (1877-1959) in 1905 in Cambridge.  They had two daughters: Doris Ethel M (1907-1996); and Marjorie Rose (1909-1980).  By 1911 the family was living at 4 Sydenham Terrace, Halifax Road, Cambridge.  John was working as a groundsman at a cricket ground.  John died on 21 April 1924 in Chesterton, Cambridgeshire.

John’s elder sister, Susan Jane Hutchinson (née Manning) (1874-1956) and her husband Robert Hutchinson (1875-1943) are buried in a family grave in this cemetery.

Charlotte Lucy Manning (née Porter) (1877-1959)

Charlotte was born in 1877 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.  She was one of at least ten children born to Thomas Humphrey Porter (c.1837-1924) and Mary Ann Porter (née Johnson) (c.1837-1905).  Charlotte’s parents were originally from London and a number of her elder siblings were also born there.  Charlotte’s father worked as an architect and surveyor.  By 1873 the family had moved to Cambridge.  In 1881 the family was living at 2 Peter Street, Cambridge.  By 1891 the family was living at 3 Eden Street, Cambridge.  By 1901 Charlotte was still living at home but she was working as a shirt maker.  Charlotte married John William Manning (1876-1924) in 1905 in Cambridge.  Charlotte died on 8 July 1959 in Cambridge.
