‘In Loving Memory of Ada Agnes Mason wife of A E Mason died Jan 29 1909

Also Albert Edward Mason who died Sept 23 1938’

Ada Agnes Mason [nee Mouel] (1865 – 29 January 1909)

Ada was the daughter of William and Eliza Mouel.  Her father was a tailor, and her mother a college bedmaker.  Ada grew up at 21 Pembroke Street [1871] and then at 2 Bentinck Terrace [1881].  She married Albert Mason in 1885.  They had six children: Florence [1885-], Mabel Maud [1888-1971], Albert Ernest [1890-1962], Arthur [1893-1966], Dorothy [1896-1960] and one other who died as an infant.

Albert was a baker and confectioner and the family lived at 41 Trumpington Street.  Ada died at home in 1909 aged 43 years old. Her death was reported in the newspapers of the time, and was very sudden.  ‘She was taken with a fit of coughing shortly after midnight, and although Drs. Roderick and Simpson were summoned with all speed, their efforts were unavailing’. The funeral service took  place in Little St Mary’s Church on 1st February, before she was buried in Mill Road Cemetery.

Albert Edward Mason (1863 – 23 September 1938)

Albert was the son of Edward and Martha Mason. He was born and raised at 52/53 Park Street [1871] and 37 Gold Street [1881].   Edward Mason was a baker, and Albert followed in his father’s footsteps and also became a baker and confectioner. He married Ada Mouel when he was 22 years old.  After being widowed he continued to run his business at 41 Trumpington Street, and died there in 1938 aged 75 years old.

His sons Albert Ernest and Arthur Mason founded Fitzbillies in October 1920 – taken the baking tradition through to the next generation.

Albert’s sister Florence Frost [nee Mason] is also buried at Mill Road Cemetery
