In Affectionate Remembrance of
HENRY W MATTHEWS
Who died March 12 1870 aged 48 years.
_____________

“His end was peace”

Also of SARAH his wife of the above who died Sep 27. 1883. Aged 64 years.

Henry William Matthews (c.1822 – 12 March 1870)

Little is known of Henry’s early life. He married widow Sarah Mason in 1866 in London. Sarah was the landlady of the Crown and Compass pub on George IVth Street, and Henry is listed as the landlord on the 1869 Post Office Directory of Cambridge.  He died aged 48 years old and his probate documents records him as being a publican.

Sarah Matthews (née Long) (1819 – 27 September 1883)

Sarah was born in Landbeach and married William Mason (1817-1865) on 28 December 1845.  The couple lived at George IVth Street where they ran a pub and had at least six children: Sarah Hannah (1847-), Margaret (1849-1912), Mary Ann (1852-), William George (1853-1939), Frederick John (1856-) and Benjamin (1858-1859). William died aged 47 after a ‘short but painful illness’, leaving Sarah a widow with five children.

She married Henry Matthews, and after being widowed for a second time ran the Crown and Compass by herself (1871).  In 1881 she was living at 14 Trinity Street and was housekeeper for David and Ann Scott. She died aged 64 years.
