George Wallace Morley (1862 – 29 March 1912)

George was born in Birmingham, and in 1884 married Mary Ann Caroline King in Portsea, Hampshire.  They had one daughter Gertrude Elizabeth (1884-), before Mary Ann died in Wellingborough in 1888.  In 1890 George married for a second time to Sophia Augusta Harris (1870-1956 ) in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.  The couple had two children: Charles Wallace (1890-) and Augusta Irene (189

The couple appear to have moved regularly as part of George’s work as a Baptist minister.  In 1891 they were living on the High Street in Ramsey, in 1901 they were living at 11 Hatter Street in Bury St. Edmunds.  The 1901 census shows George working as clock, watch and jewellery jobber, boot repairer and Baptist minister, so it is probable that he earned a living in a number of different ways.

He served as the Pastor of Cottenham Baptist Chapel for a period in the 1890’s.  The Cambridge Independent Press reported a bible class tea at the Chapel in April 1893.  Seventy people attended and were served an ‘excellent tea’ provided by Sophia Morley amongst other ladies. After the tea George Morley played the harmonium and also chaired the programme of ‘vocal and instrumental music, readings and recitations’.   By 1911 he was living with Sophia at “Bancroft”, West Bergholt, Essex.  He died at West Bergholt aged 49 years old, and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery.

Augusta Irene (1895 – 1896)

Augusta died aged 13 months old and was buried on March 9th.
