George was the son of Henry and Hannah (née Nunn) and was born in Tuddenham. He grew up in Mildenhall where his father was a watchmaker and ran a shop on the High Street which also sold jewellery and sewing machines. He married Emma Phillips in Mildenhall in 1880 and they had six children: Ethel Emma (1881-1971), Herbert Phillip (1882-1962), Henry George (1883-1961), Lilian Elizabeth (Lily) (1887-1928), Eric Cooper (1888-1954) and Effie (1891-1987). In 1881 the family were living in Fordham, and George was working as a watchmaker. They had moved to Burwell by at least 1891 and he continued to work as a watchmaker. He later became an assistant in an antiques shop and the family lived at 6 George Street, off Chesterton Road (1901/1911). In 1935 George and Emma were living at 66-68 Catharine Street with son Henry and daughter-in-law Helen. He died at Catharine Street aged 82 years old.
