Bertha Murfitt (née Whitehead) (26 March 1880 – 29 May 1935)

Bertha was the daughter of George and Catherine Whitehead and was born in Waterbeach. She grew up at Fen End, where her father ran a general store.  She married Alfred Murfitt in late 1897 and they had three children:  Lillian Daisy (1898-1971), Alfred Leonard Victor (1901-1989) and Cecil Claud (1903-1977).  Alfred worked as a bricklayer/builders labourer and they lived at Fen End (1901) and then at Station Road, Waterbeach (1911).  It is thought that they had moved to Cambridge by at least 1919 as Alfred Murfitt (Jnr) was fined 10s for riding a bike without lights in October of that year. Bertha died in Cambridge aged 55 years old.

Alfred Murfitt (17 July 1871 – 21 February 1943)

Alfred was also born in Waterbeach and was the son of Charles and Sarah Ann Murfitt. His father worked as a labourer, and he grew up at Fen End like his wife Bertha. After he was widowed he went to live with his daughter Daisy at 15 Ross Street, and in 1939 was described as a builder’s yardsman.  He died at Ross Street aged 71 years old.
