William Newell (1856 – 8 January 1936)
William was born in Cambridge and was the son of George and Catherine Newell. Aged 14 [1871] he was living at 5 David Street with his parents and working as a grocer’s porter.
He married Catherine Elborn in 1883 when he was 27 years old. They had one child, who died in infancy. In 1891 the couple were living at 41 South Street, and William was working as a college porter. By 1901 they were living at Gonville and Caius College, where William was the college porter. In 1911 they were living at St Michael’s Court, Gonville and Caius College. He died aged 79 years old.
Catherine Newell [nee Elborn] (8 August 1860 – 21 May 1948)
Catherine was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Elborn. She was brought up at 13 Terrace Lane [1861/1871] and her father Thomas worked as a labourer, and later as a coal porter. Aged 20 she was living at home with her parents at 7 Doric Street and working as a dressmaker. She married William Newell in 1883.
After being widowed she went to live at the Perse Almshouses on Newnham Road [1939]. The 1939 register describes her as a ‘retired college servant’. She died aged 87 years old.
