Joshua Newman (c.1830 – 30 January  1913)

Joshua was born in Bourn and baptised there on 30 April 1831. He was the son of cooper James and Mary Ann and  aged 20 was living at home and working as an agricultural labourer. He married Mary North on 28 June 1853 at St. Mary the Less Church and they had nine children: Charles (1855-1912), Frederick (1857), Emily (1859-1921), Alfred (1861-), Eleanor (1868-1932), Florence May (1879-) and a further three children who died as infants.

Joshua worked as a domestic coachman (1861), an organ builder (1881/1891) and a gardener (1871, 1901). By 1911 he had retired and was described as a retired gardener on the census of that year.  The family lived at 12 Princes Street (1861-1881), 12 Belvedere Terrace (1891) and then 53 Argyle Street (at least 1901 onwards). Joshua died at home aged 82 years old.

Mary Ann Newman  (née North) (c.1828 – 2 September 1916)

Mary was born in Royston, and aged 13 was working as a servant at 2 Hills Road before marrying Joshua Newman when she was c.25 years old. She died at Argyle Street aged 88 years old.

Emily Newman (1859 – 25 November 1921)

Emily was baptised at St. Paul’s Church on 26 June 1859. She lived with her parents and worked as a dressmaker, as did her sisters Eleanor and Florence. Emily died at Argyle Street and was buried on 29 November 1921.
