Susan Martin Parris (née Pitman) (1821 – 9 December 1884)
Susan was the daughter of clerk Silas (1796-1861) and Honor (née Bartlett) (1793 – 1839) Pitman. She was born in North Barrow, Somerset and baptised there on 2 September 1821. Aged 20, Susan was working as a servant in Queen Camel, Somerset and married John Parris on 16 December 1847 in Milton Clevedon, Somerset. John was a farm labourer when they married and in 1851 the couple were living in Milton Clevedon. In 1857 the couple moved to Australia on an assisted immigrant migration scheme arriving in New South Wales on 23 July 1857. It is not known how long they remained in Australia, but by 1881 had returned to England and working at the Leys School, Cambridge. John was a house porter and Susan was an assistant matron. Susan died at Mill Road aged 63 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 11 December.
John Parris (1822 – September 1904)
John was born in Milton Clevedon, to the north of Bruton, Somerset and was baptised there on 20 April 1823. He was the son of James and Anne Parris and his father was an agricultural labourer. After Susan’s death he married Emma Hurry (1831-1909) on 12 June 1888 and they lived at Myrtle House, 16 Belgrave Road. John died at home aged 82 years old and his funeral took place on 10 September.
